Holistic Midwifery Clinic

An increasing number of women make use of complementary therapies throughout their pregnancies, birth and the postnatal period.  As a midwife who has taken Royal College of Midwives-approved training (through Expectancy) to provide certain therapies and related advice, I can address your concerns in a holistic way, in full awareness of your particular obstetric history.  This way, you can be assured that the therapies you are using are as safe as possible for your pregnancy, and based on evidence-based practice where available.

The ethos of my complementary practice is to support your own ability to cope with common complaints of pregnancy, birth and the period of adjustment with your new baby, to help you enjoy this transition.  If your needs extend beyond the scope of normal midwifery, or if I feel another service may be more appropriate or useful to you, I will make appropriate referrals and help to ensure good communication between the various health professionals caring for you.

Each time you see me, a full report is provided to keep with your antenatal notes, for your community midwife to be kept informed (with your consent).  I can see you at home or at The Orange Grove Clinic in Norwich.  An initial appointment will last at least an hour, and cost £45 at the clinic, or £50 for a home visit.  Please phone 07947819122 to schedule.

A Peaceful Pregnancy Package of 5 hour-long combined reflexology and aromatherapy treatments can be bought for £200.  This is a nice gift, particularly when used at the end of pregnancy, when regular relaxing reflexology can help you to labour earlier and easier, with less intervention.

Antenatal Consultations

  • Maternity Reflexology - Wonderful for relaxation, caring for you as you prepare to care for your baby.  Able to address a variety of pregnancy complaints and shown in research to increase your chances of labouring spontaneously.
  • Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (NVP) - Consultation includes a review of the evidence about what therapies are available, researched, effective and thought to be safe in early pregnancy.  We will look at your personal experience of nausea and/or vomiting, and I will suggest which therapies may work best in your situation, alongside dietary and lifestyle advice.  Some are immediately available for you to take with you.  I also provide a reflexology relaxation treatment during this appointment, which is especially helpful if NVP is compounded by stress or tension.
  • Encouraging breech babies to turn & breech birth
  • Post-dates pregnancy - Consultation will include a thorough discussion of the research pertaining to pregnancies which last beyond 40 weeks, to help you make an informed decision regarding induction.  The consultation also includes reflexology, accupressure point stimulation and/or aromatherapy for natural induction of labour.  If appropriate and you wish it, I am also able to perform a slow, gentle and thorough cervical sweep, along with a visualisation to help your cervix open with your full consent and participation.
  • Fear and anxiety surrounding childbirth, including feelings surfacing from previous birth or life experiences
  • Gestational thrombocytopenia - Benign low platelet levels experienced at the end of pregnancy.  I can help you with information on your birth choices, nutritional information to help raise platelet levels and reflexology.
  • Other common complaints of pregnancy, such as back ache, constipation, haemorrhoids, carpal tunnel syndrome, swelling and oedema
Postnatal Consultations
  • Breastfeeding support and advice
  • Anxiety and depression - Reflexology and aromatherapy treatments may assist in the treatment or prevention of mild anxiety and depression, and support general healing and well-being after birth
Group Preparation

The Norwich Birth Group offers two options for antenatal preparation:
  • The Birth Group, which meets in the evenings, and is run by doula Rachel Graveling; and
  • The Baby Garden, for pregnant and new mums and babies, which I am involved with
I highly encourage you to attend one or both as you prepare for the birth of your baby.  If you would like to meet me informally prior to scheduling a holistic consultation, I am usually at the Baby Garden.

Please note:  I am insured through the Royal College of Nurses to provide antenatal and postnatal care, and antenatal education, as a self-employed midwife.  Professional Indemnity Insurance for care during labour is currently not available for Independent Midwives.  Therefore, like all IM's, I work without insurance when I attend home births.  More information is available from the IMUK website.
